Dr. Walter Dawson is licensed and Board Certified as an Acupuncture Physician and Primary Care Provider in the State of Florida. Traditional Chinese Medicine treats a variety of health conditions, including, but not limited to: PTSD, stroke rehabilitation, Bell's Palsy, chemotherapy/radiation symptom relief, addictions, headaches, and acute and chronic pain syndromes. Dr. Walter specializes in Cosmetic Acupuncture, embracing the desire of patients looking to rejuvenate and revitalize regions of their face and neck.
While Dr. Walter is not a traditional medical doctor, he practices within the natural scope of Functional Medicine. He does not prescribe medications but works on comprehensive, root-cause health issues and focuses on optimal health through a natural approach. He is able to perform physical examinations and assessments, order & interpret lab work, order & interpret diagnostic imaging and write non-prescription orders. For patients requiring medications, Dr. Walter will refer them to our in-house nurse practitioners.
Dr. Walter sees both pediatric and adult patients at Dawson Integrative & Functional Medicine, LLC (formerly known as Dawson Integrative Medical Center, LLC). His main areas of specializations and niches in Functional Medicine include hormone/thyroid health, adrenal fatigue, weight management, nutritional deficiencies, gut health, reversal/prevention of chronic disease, pain management, autoimmune & immune health, mold illness, mental health, lifestyle (nutrition, sleep, stress).
Looking back, Dr. Walter recalled an interest in in medicine at an early age. In his childhood he found himself immersed in reading medical-related books and watching medical television shows. Upon graduating from high school, Dr. Walter joined the military, where he served for 10 years. He would first serve as an Army Aviation Mechanic before re-enlisting to become an Army Medic. He proudly served his country in many special military operations and conflicts around the globe; including "Operation Desert Storm."
Dr. Walter's interest in alternative medicine developed after his mother was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia. In less than one year after being diagnosed, she lost her battle with the disease. Western medicine had put forth and earnest effort in treating his mother's physical body; however, concurrent treatment of her spirit and mind were left neglected and unattended to. One day while reading an article on Chinese Medicine Philosophy, Dr. Walter became captivated by its theory that "the mind, body and spirit are considered one. Any imbalance in one, leads to an imbalance in another. " This sparked his interest in Traditional Chinese Medicine.
Prior to attending medical school, Dr. Walter worked 20+ years in the medical field. His experiences included work as a medical assistant, telemetry technician, phlebotomist, and a paramedic. In 2014, he enrolled in the Florida College of Integrative Medicine in Orlando, Florida. In 2021, Dr. Walter obtained his Bachelor of Science degree in Professional Health Studies and a Master of Science degree in Oriental Medicine. In 2022, he became nationally Board Certified through NCCAOM as a Diplomate in Oriental Medicine, Acupuncture, and Herbology. Dr. Walter is licensed by the State of Florida as a Primary Care Provider and Acupuncture Physician.
In his spare time, Dr. Walter enjoys working out at the gym, competing in obstacle course races, reading, learning, spending time with his family, traveling and exploring diverse cultures. Other interests include motorcycles, movies, and following wherever his adventurous nerd side takes him.
